Judge Wald was a pioneering attorney and judge in the United States, she was the first woman on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia before being appointed as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan . She then received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 from President Barack Obama.

Richard Goldstone, chair of the CICC Advisory Board stated, “I had the privilege of working closely with Judge Wald for many years. She strongly believed in justice, in achieving strong empathy with victims, strongly opposed any kind of prejudice for gender or race. We will definitely miss her. ”

The Coalition had the honor of having Judge Wald on its Advisory Board for many years. She participated in the CICC Eminence Panel to assist in the evaluation of the ICC's judicial candidates which ultimately resulted in the Advisory Committee for Judicial Nominations, approved by the Assembly of States Parties.
