This month, the EU and UN will chair the Brussels II Conference, which will focus on "Supporting the Future of Syria and the region". 15 NGOs are calling for support to accountability and justice mechanisms at the conference.

In advance of the 'Brussels II Conference' on 24th-25 April, several coalition member organisations have drafted an open letter to the EU and UN urging them to ensure accountability and justice for atrocities committed during the Syrian conflict is a top priority during discussions at the conference.

15 civil society organisations, including  including Coalition members REDRESS, No Peace without Justice, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), TRIAL International, Open Society Justice Initiative and Coalition parent organziation the World Federalist Movement - Institute for Global Policy signed the letter which calls on members to do more to "overcome impunity and bring justice to victims for the overwhelming magnitude of atrocity over the past seven years."

“Brussels conference participants need to raise the costs for atrocities, and to significantly increase their own support for refugees and the future of Syria’s children,” said Lotte Leicht, EU director at Human Rights Watch

The conference will be hosted by the EU and will consist of over 85 delegations from the international community. It will centre around three objectives: reaffirming support for efforts to broker a political solution to the conflict, improving conditions to allow humanitarian support, and maintaining international engagement in delivering assistance to Syrian people, both in and outside of Syria.
