Artak Kirakosyan, chairman of Civil Society Institute Armenia:
“As a country of a nation who has survived through genocide, Armenia should be a pioneer in spreading jurisdiction of international justice and in particular that of ICC. It’s high time to remove the political and legal barriers to ratifying Rome Statute by the Republic of Armenia.”
Armenia is the focus of our Campaign for Global Justice this month.
CALL ON ARMENIA TO JOIN THE ICC
Armenia signed the ICC Rome Statute in 1999, but according to a court ruling, it must amend its constitution before ratifying and becoming a member of the ICC.
After our Coalition called on the government to rectify the situation last year, president recently approved a constitutional reform strategy that includes the necessary amendments. But the process may not begin until 2016.
Armenia is one of only 12 states in Europe and Central Asia that have not joined the ICC. It’s time that changed.
Kirsten Meersschaert Duchens, Coalition for the ICC regional coordinator for Europe:
“By joining the ICC, Armenia can pay homage to victims of the past, present, and future and ensure that ‘never again’ becomes a reality by helping to put an end to impunity for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.”
