“I am fully convinced that corruption and impunity are the main triggers for most social problems in Mexico. Therefore, I work on international justice."

Nancy Lopez

Lawyer - Comisión Mexicana de Defensa y Promoción de los Derechos Humanos

Together with a team of committed men and women from the Mexican Commission for the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights, as well as victims and their families, Nancy Lopez confronts issues of justice denied in Mexico, exploring possibilities for international justice before mechanisms like the ICC.

With the Comisión Mexicana de Defensa y Promoción de los Derechos Humanos, Nancy plays a critical role within Mexican civil society by bringing into focus the country’s need for the global fight against impunity – to ensure the non-repetition of international crimes like enforced displacement, enforced disappearance, torture, executions and sexual crimes in the country; but also to lay groundwork for solutions to many of Mexico’s social issues.

With the Comisión Mexicana coordinating Mexican civil society activities around the ICC, Nancy advocates for the Mexican government to honor its commitment to ensure that international justice is respected and enforced, and that the state abides by its obligations as an ICC member state. Such advocacy has entailed pushing Mexico to implement the Rome Statute, including its pivotal state cooperation provisions.

“I am fully convinced that corruption and impunity are the main triggers for most social problems in Mexico. Therefore, I work on international justice, with the conviction of helping victims of disappearance, torture and other international crimes find the truth and justice they deserve.”

Much of Nancy’s work deals with how corruption and impunity act as the main triggers for most of Mexico’s social problems, and thus why international justice should serve as an inalienable element of domestic policies and law. To help victims of disappearance, torture and other international crimes find the truth and justice they deserve, Nancy advocates for an agile and efficient international justice system that can effectively combat impunity while promoting national reconciliation processes.

Nancy’s everyday work at the Comisión Mexicana, together with a team of committed men and women, involves documenting and accompanying victims in cases where there is a reasonable basis to believe human rights violations and/or crimes against humanity have been committed. Confronting the repeated denials of justice in Mexico alongside victims and their families, Nancy continues to explore the potential for international justice to reach her country.
