Together For Justice: Meet Alejandra Vicente

“We are living in a challenging time for international justice, where many international organisations and courts are being delegitimised, defunded, and attacked. [It is therefore] crucial that civil society organisations and victim groups continue to work together, to seek creative solutions that provide victims with an answer in the pursuit of justice and reparation.”

Alejandra Vicente, Head of Law at REDRESS, draws hope from the resilience and determination of victims, which inspires human rights organisations to find innovative ways to support their fight for justice.

Alejandra highlights how organisations like REDRESS are working tirelessly to better document crimes and present cases on both national and international stages, often through the principle of universal jurisdiction. A key focus at REDRESS is seizing assets obtained through illicit means by perpetrators and using them to deliver transformative reparations for victims—reparations that not only address their suffering but also tackle the deep-rooted inequities they face.

At a time when international justice is under threat, Alejandra makes a powerful call for civil society organisations and victim groups to unite, finding creative solutions to ensure that justice and reparations are delivered to those who need them most.

About REDRESS

REDRESS is an NGO that pursues legal claims on behalf of survivors of torture in the UK and around the world to obtain justice and reparation for the violation of their human rights. REDRESS empowers survivors to access justice through human rights cases against governments, civil cases against individuals, and criminal cases where we advocate for law enforcement bodies to prosecute perpetrators under the principle of universal jurisdiction. REDRESS’ approach is strategic, so that as well as representing an individual, the organisation targets the policy reasons that enabled the torture to take place, by building a campaign that uses advocacy, community engagement, and communications to influence change.

REDRESS partners with national NGOs to develop the campaign, including medics, lawyers, advocates, and activists. REDRESS also works collaboratively with other international organisations within the anti-torture movement, including NGOs that provide rehabilitation for survivors.
