Together For Justice: Meet Martin Mavenjina
"The ICC [...] has encouraged a practice of non-repetition. Since the dark moment we had in 2007 – 2008 [in Kenya], we have not seen such serious human rights violations and it has brought a semblance of accountability, whereby we have seen our security agencies, and, by extension, those entrusted with authority, be careful in how they exercise this authority."
Martin Mavenjina, Senior Program Advisor at the Kenya Human Rights Commission, reflects on the importance of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in fostering a culture of accountability and non-repetition of grave international crimes.
Reflecting on Kenya's past, particularly the post-election violence of 2007–2008, Martin notes that the presence of the ICC has helped bring a sense of accountability, influencing how authorities exercise their power.
Martin also highlights how the ICC's role has inspired positive developments across Africa, such as the African Transitional Justice Policy, which provides frameworks for justice and reconciliation. These frameworks not only enable victims and survivors to seek justice but also deter potential perpetrators from committing serious crimes. Martin's hope is that these international frameworks will continue to hold those who commit serious crimes accountable, offering victims and survivors a path to justice.
